You feel transported back to blissful beat times when author Danny Simmons fires his eloquent volleys into the audience. Who would have thought that Ron Carter, the grand seigneur of the double bass and probably the most recorded bass player of the planet, has a thing for “something like that”. The album is a live recording of New York’s BRIC JazzFest, and Carter draws inspiration from Simmons’s poems for impressive improvisations ranging from gentle lyrics to gruff expressivity.
